NASHVILLE, Tenn.--A Tennessee state representative is seeking to decriminalize possession and the casual exchange of small amounts of marijuana.

State Representative London Lamar (D-Memphis) is sponsoring HB413 which was submitted for consideration on Tuesday.

Under the bill, it would be legal for a person to have less than one ounce (28.35 grams) of marijuana in their possession. The bill would also allow for the casual exchange of a small amount of marijuana as long as there is no transaction taking place.

Casual exchange would not include any type of payment, coupon, gift card or token which is otherwise used to purchase merchandise or goods.

If the bill made it through committees and passed both chambers of the assembly, it would go into effect on July 1, 2021.
