Space cake isn’t something astronauts eat once they’ve left Earth’s atmosphere behind. Rather, it’s a delicious marijuana treat that may just take the top spot away from brownies on your list of best ever cannabis edibles. In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about space cake and give you directions for making one in your very own kitchen.
Like special brownies, space cake is cannabis slang for baked goods that contain a healthy dose of marijuana. Any cake recipe will do as long as there’s cannabis in the mix.
How To Make Space Cake
Don’t Dump Raw Weed In The Batter
Raw weed straight from the plant is non-psychoactive. In its raw form, it’s just another vegetable like spinach or kale (albeit one that doesn’t taste good and can make you sick). In order to unlock the cannabinoids inside the buds, you have to dry and cure it before you use it. Thankfully, most of the stuff you buy at your local dispensary is already dried and cured so you don’t have to worry about that. But even after being dried and cured, there’s more to cooking with cannabis than just dumping a handful of bud into the batter. It doesn’t matter if you’re making a space cake, spaghetti sauce, honey, or even cannabis coffee, you absolutely must decarboxylate your weed if you hope to experience any effects.
Always Decarboxylate First
Don’t be scared of decarboxylation! Yeah, it’s got a lot of syllables, but the process itself is super simple. All you need is an oven, a baking sheet, and a bit of time. Plus, it’s essential if you want to feel the psychedelic and medicinal effects of your bud. In its dried and cured form (as you’ll buy it at your dispensary), cannabis contains the acidic molecules THCA and CBDA. Those are of no use to your body whatsoever. Even the newest of newbs knows that it’s THC and CBD that make marijuana what it is. So how do you get THC and CBD out of THCA and CBDA? Just add heat.
Here’s a quick and dirty guide to decarboxylating your bud before baking it in a space cake.
- Preheat your oven to 240 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Break your buds into small pieces and spread on a baking sheet
- Bake the cannabis in the oven for 40 minutes turning the pan and stirring the bud every 10 minutes to ensure an even bake
Making Cannabutter
Ask any cannaseur and they’ll probably tell you that raw bud even decarboxylated isn’t the best tasting stuff on the planet. And, really, it’s not the plant matter itself that you want it’s the cannabinoids they contain. So, rather than mixing decarboxylated bud into your batter, extract the cannabinoids and then bake your space cake. The best way to extract the cannabinoids from the plant matter for cooking purposes is to create a cannabutter or cannaoil infusion.
When you infuse a butter or oil with cannabis, you make following any recipe infinitely easier. None of the recipes in our collection include pot as an ingredient. But damn near all of them — the tasty ones, anyway — include butter or oil as a main ingredient. If your butter or oil already has cannabis in it which it will if you make your own infusion all you have to do is measure, mix, and bake. It’s as simple as that.
Here’s our favorite set-it-and-forget-it way to make cannabutter. Yeah, you’ll need an Instant Pot, but the relatively small investment makes cooking with cannabis so much easier.
- Melt 1 cup of butter in the microwave or on the stove
- Pour melted butter into a 1-pint (16 ounce) canning jar (don’t fill the jar much more than halfway)
- Grind up ½ ounce of your favorite weed
- Add the weed to the butter
- Stir to distribute the cannabis throughout the butter
- Place a lid on the jar, cover with a canning ring, and close to finger tight
- Set the canning jar on a rack or ring in the bottom of the Instant Pot
- Pour water into the Instant Pot until it reaches the middle of the jar
- Close the lid of the Instant Pot
- Make sure the Keep Warm setting is on
- Set to Pressure Cook on high for 20 minutes
- When the cycle is done, allow the Instant Pot to release the pressure naturally for 40 minutes while the Keep Warm setting is on
- Don oven mitts and remove the jar to cool
- When the jar and ring are cool enough to handle with bare hands, remove the ring and lid
- NOTE: Because the jar and its contents were under pressure, the butter may “spray” a bit when you crack the lid
- Pour the cannabutter through a strainer or cheesecloth into a mixing bowl or directly into a half-pint canning jar (you may need a funnel for that) to remove plant matter
- Feel free to squeeze the cheesecloth or press on the strainer to get all the butter, but you may inadvertently push some of the bad-tasting plant matter through
- Put the lid on the storage jar and place it in the refrigerator to cool
That’s it! You’ve made your own cannabutter. Now, at long last, it’s time to bake your space cake. Don’t have an Instant Pot? No worries. You can make cannabutter and cannaoil on the stove.

Space Cake Recipe
As we mentioned you can transform any cake recipe into a delicious space cake just by substituting cannabutter or cannaoil. If you’re hit hard with the munchies and really jonesing for some baked goods you can even save yourself a bit of math and measuring by using a box cake mix to excellent effect. We prefer the homemade variety our grandma used to make, but you do you and all will be right with the world. Here’s a basic recipe for space cake that we’re sure you’ll love to nom.
Ingredients
- ½ cup of cannabutter (this is a high dose so feel free to use less cannabutter and make up the difference with regular butter)
- 1 ¾ cups of flour
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 1 ½ teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 cup of sugar
- ¾ cup of milk
- 2 eggs
- Any extras you want to add (we like chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, or MM candies).
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
- Grease a cake pan with butter or cooking spray
- Combine wet ingredients (butter, milk, and eggs) in a mixing bowl
- Combine dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and any extras that tickle your fancy) in another mixing bowl
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well
- Spread the space cake batter evenly in your baking pan
- Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick poked into the middle comes out clean
- Allow the space cake to cool in the pan for 20 minutes
- After 20 minutes, remove the cake from the pan and place on a wire rack to finish cooling
- Dig in!
Space cake is great all by itself but we always frost our space cake because, well, frosting. Again, you do you as long as you enjoy it.
